An eight-bidder auction frenzy has propelled a Wyndham Vale home with an intriguing Wizard of Oz mural in the backyard to a sale that “went off its head”.

And the seller even brought along their little dog, too.

The 345 McGrath Rd home hit the market with a $530,000-$580,000 asking price and throughout the weeks leading up to auction attracted a steady stream of investors and first-home buyers.

Ray White’s Alex Krnjeta handled the sale and said most of the buyers had quite liked the art work on the home’s shed, with a dozen registering to bid at yesterday’s auction.

Bidding started at $530,000, the home was called on the market at $565,000 and the home ultimately sold for $627,500 to a first-home buyer.

“It was pretty free-flowing and aggressive bidding,” Mr Krnjeta said.

“The underbidder was also a first-home buyer and they had missed out on another last weekend.”

The unusual backyard mural was added to the home by a former resident, with the investor selling the home unsure what it had intended to represent.

The front of the home gives no hint of the surprising backyard inclusion.

The home features extensive space to entertain, inside and out.

The house also featured three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an impressive outdoor entertainment space.

He’s tipping this is just the start of a strong year for Melbourne’s west.

“The take away is that the market is heating up,” Mr Krnjeta said.

While an interest rate rise on the cards for next Tuesday would be “interesting”, the agent said it was not likely to impact sales in the outer west significantly. “I don’t think it will affect our area because of the price point

In nearby Altona, a two-bedroom apartment sold on the Esplanade might have just become the most affordable beachfront address that will sell in the suburb this year.

The 5/245 Esplanade property was listed with a $440,000-$480,000 price guide and got a $450,000 opening offer via a phone bidder.

Directly opposite the beach front, the home is a rare option under $1m on the popular street.

Inside, the home is light and bright and had been given an update.

The price kept rising until the hammer came down at $536,500 for the two-bedroom residence

Ray White Altona’s Andrew Dowton said three of the four buyers who registered had bid, with a first-home buyer couple claiming the keys.

“It’s definitely going to be in the realms of being the most affordable home sold on the Altona waterfront for the year,” Mr Dowton said.

The agent added that the home had received a few cosmetic updates and was being sold vacant after a prior sales attempt when the home was tenanted.
