Former Barossa Valley cellar door selling as trendy home

You could be forgiven for mistakenly thinking this home is a cellar door – because it once was.

The Krondorf property in SA’s Barossa Valley use to be Kabminye Winery but an extensive renovation has turned it into a trendy home.

Marty Powell and his partner Bruce have called the property at 210 Krondorf Rd home for the past 12 years, they won’t for much longer though as they have listed it for sale.

It was an operating cellar door with a restaurant, art gallery and exhibition space when they bought it.

The Krondorf property was once a cellar door.

It has since been turned into an impressive home.

It’s a mix of modern and industrial with some character features that were retained.

The main living areas have stunning views of surrounding wine country through floor-to-ceiling windows.

“The unique architecture and vineyard setting, along with the peace and quiet that comes with it, really drew us in,” Mr Powell said.

It very much looked like a cellar door still when they moved in so they would often get hopeful visitors.

“People would stop in looking for a wine tasting,” Mr Powell said.

The couple have since transformed the property into a four-bedroom house, with work accelerating during the Covid pandemic.

“A lot of people renovated during Covid, and that certainly accelerated things for us,” Mr Powell said.

“We went full swing during that time – brand new bathrooms, ensuites, a new kitchen, all while working with the old bones of the place.

“It’s quite industrial in character.”

While modernising it, the couple considered the home’s character so as not to lose it in the end product.

It spans two storeys and has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and large living areas with floor-to-ceiling windows offering breathtaking views of surrounding wine country.

They created a wine room in the centre of the house to take advantage of the naturally cool conditions, while a rustic wood-fired oven can be used for both heating and cooking.

The main living area is open plan.

An upstairs level could also be used as a living area, or in this case a gym.

There are four bedrooms and two bathrooms throughout the house.

A central wine room is a standout feature.

“The setting is spectacular, and we’ve really enjoyed the sunsets here and many an impromptu cocktail hour,” Mr Powell said.

They are selling in preparation for retirement and to move closer to Adelaide.

“The search was hard. We’ve had this space for such a long time, but we’ve found a property with that same feeling and less maintenance,” Mr Powell said.

“We’re so happy with the work we have done here.”

He said the property would suit a range of buyers, including those with entrepreneurial ideas.

“A lot of the hard work has been done. You can put in a swimming pool and a shed,” Mr Powell said.

“The infrastructure is there and someone can enjoy it as a home or even return it to a business.”

Ray White Grange agent James Aubert is selling the home, which will go under the hammer at 11am on January 18
