Blue Mountains castle with moat and drawbridge dividing house-hunting couples

Nestled in Wentworth Falls town in the Blue Mountains is a home that stands apart from nearby Sydney’s usual real estate offerings.

At 100 Blaxland Rd, this re-creation of a castle into an English Tudor mansion boasts distinct medieval features from parapet walls, an operating moat and drawbridge to a tower entrance.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom residence surrounded by enchanting gardens backs onto the Wentworth Falls Golf Course.

It is dividing house-hunting couples, according to its listing agent.

The operating moat and drawbridge entry of the home

“It was built about 40 years ago by a very eccentric English teacher at the Blue Mountains Grammar school who deliberately built it as a castle,” listing agent John Chapman of John Chapman Superior Sales said.

It’s castle features include an operating moat to drawbridge entry.

“There are wheels inside so you can pull it up,” Mr Chapman said. “There is also an internal portcullis.”

Inside the home

The home is styled with armour, swords …

… and even a throne

The current owners are a Sydney-based couple. They decorated the home to theme including armour, swords and even a throne.

It’s renovations include heating of the entire stone ground floor by individual sections, new roof, two new bathrooms and a large laundry with a powder room.

“It got into disrepair over the years,” Mr Chapman said.

“Then it was bought by an interesting Sydney couple who were both doctors and they spent a lot of money on it. They replaced the asbestos containing roof, they spent about $300,000 to $400,000 on the downstairs floor – and turned it into a modern open plan with granite flooring and heating and modern kitchen.”

The home has undergone major contemporary renovations downstairs

“They very carefully retained all of the original bricks and things that when you walk in you can’t tell that there has been major renovations, it just looks stunningly modern.”

In recent years the home has been used as an Airbnb with a price around $600 per night.

“The owners deliberately set it up as an Airbnb and they redid the downstairs as their own private room with a beautiful ensuite and made it lockable,” Mr Chapman said.

“One family has consistently taken it on every Christmas and has had their Christmas at the castle.”

Backing onto Wentworth Falls Golf Course

Mr Chapman said they had expected to sell the home in a heartbeat.

“I personally love it,” he said. “You literally can belt a ball off the back lawn onto the second fairway.

“It’s not exactly dramatically priced either.”

Although there has been strong interest from buyers, Mr Chapman said this has come with the catch of couples at odds with one loving the home and the other not as fond of its medieval elements.

“Couples would come and one would love it and the other would say, I’m not living in a castle,” he said.

“Then of course we only had a number of occasions where both loved it, but then there were issues such as children’s schooling or whatever normally happens.”

The backyard of the home

Located within the Golden Mile of Wentworth Falls, it is situated in walking distance to the village with restaurants, cafes and shops and close to Wentworth Falls Lake and the Upper Blue Mountains.

“The table on the back lawn is one of the most picturesque tables in the Blue Mountains,” Mr Chapman said.

“It’s remarkably close to the town.”

The residence is listed with a price guide of $1.7m to $1.77m.
