Rather than move from the family home, Klemich Real Estate agent Angelo Svic said it often made more sense to subdivide and sell parts of larger properties to rid ageing vendors of the upkeep of sprawling gardens, tennis courts and pools. Supplied “People get to a certain point of life where they still love their house but they don’t want all the work of having to look after the garden or the pool or whatever it is,” Mr Svic said. “They think about downsizing (selling their property and buying a smaller one) but then they realise, ‘Hang on, what I’m selling and what I’m buying is going to be the same price – I’m not going to be any better off out of this’. “It makes far greater sense (to subdivide) if you have got that larger allotment of land. “To me, this is a very smart idea – why would you not do it?” Older Australians are weighing up their options and finding ways to stay in their homes without the burden of big yards.
