A Darwin couple is saying goodbye to their beloved Fannie Bay property, putting the resort-style home complete with Balinese bathroom and Troppo renovation under the hammer after two decades of ownership.
The couple bought the 1150 sqm property at 2 Macartney St, Fannie Bay, 23 years ago when their two daughters were teenagers.
“It survived Cyclone Tracy and it was renovated after that, but when we bought it, it was in need of an upgrade,” the wife said.
Her husband agreed the home was looking “down in the mouth” when they got the keys, but it came with a rich past.
“A chap down the road was a quantity surveyor, and his comment to me when we bought this house was that this house had a history,” he said.
“After the cyclone, the house was extended and renovated and became a bit of a showpiece.
“When it sold, it fetched a price that people thought was amazing at that time.”

The couple said the house had fabulous bones and great potential with plenty of space, a big block and a perfect location.
They enlisted Troppo Architects to help bring the property back to life and create perfect indoor-outdoor living for the Darwin lifestyle.
“They had some really exciting ideas we went with,” the wife said.
“They did a really cool water feature off the guttering, so when it rains it’s like a waterfall.
“And I really love the Balinese bathroom.
“You can lie there and feel like you’re in the middle of Bali, just surrounded foliage and birds.
“It’s quite lovely and very peaceful.”
Spread across two levels, the home has five bedrooms, open plan living and easy indoor-outdoor flow.
On the ground floor, the home has a wraparound veranda, louvres, timber accents, garden views and bright, light-filled living spaces.
The large living area, the kitchen and the study all open to the veranda, while the double carport opens to the family room.

The kitchen has black cabinetry, butchers block benchtops, a five-burner gas stove and a servery with bi-fold windows opening to the breakfast bar on the veranda.
The master bedroom is on this level and includes the incredible Bali-style ensuite.
This bathroom is semi-enclosed and features timber accents, loads of windows and a soaker tub.
There is also a second bedroom with built-in robes, a bathroom easily accessed from outside, and a laundry on the veranda.
Upstairs, a hallway looks out over a void over the living area.
Two of the three bedrooms have built-in robes while one also has access to a balcony.
There is also a bathroom and separate toilet.
Outside, the tropical theme continues with a resort-style pool and Bali hut, all surrounded by established tropical gardens.
“People have said our home is like a resort,” the husband said.
The couple said the home had been perfect for entertaining and hosting visiting family and friends.
“We’ve had a lot of good times here,” the wife said.
“We had the girls’ 21st birthdays here and, with the indoor-outdoor living, you can open the home up and have quite a crowd.”

The home sits on a private block with remote gate access, but it close to all Fannie Bay has to offer.
“It’s a lovely, friendly neighbourhood,” the wife said.
“We have street parties a couple of times a year and it’s the kind of place where you know your neighbour and feel safe.
“Plus we’re close to Parap markets and the sailing clubs – we’re right in the middle of it all actually.”
The couple are selling to move closer to family, but they’re going to miss their Fannie Bay oasis.
“We’ll miss the breezes, swimming in the pool and being able to sit outside in one of a number of areas where we can just enjoy the birdlife, the trees and the leaves rustling,” the husband said.
“And we’ll miss the laksas,” his wife added.
