New coastal suburb with over 3000 homes set for Adelaide industrial site

A long-dormant oil refinery site on Adelaide’s southern coastline is set for a new life as a seaside community. The South Australian government has approved the rezoning of the former Port Stanvac oil refinery site, paving the way for the newly-named suburb of South Beach – a 230-hectare coastal area that will eventually deliver 3600 new homes. Picture: SA governmentLocated south of Adelaide’s centre and next to the industrial suburb of Lonsdale, the new community will also include a mixed-use town centre, community facilities and services, and is expected to support nearly 1700 jobs. Up to 15% of the homes will be affordable housing, with a mix of dwellings expected to accommodate about 8000 new residents. Set to be delivered by developer MAB, the suburb will also feature a 40-hectare coastal reserve – opening 1.7km of beach to the public – with 31% of the total site dedicated to open space. Residents will have direct access to Lonsdale railway station and the Southern Expressway.
