Doing it Tough expo: Free help for SA families hitting the wall

Homeowners and renters struggling with cost-of-living pressures could find the lifeline they’re looking for in the form of an expo aimed at connecting them with organisations that can assist them. The Doing it Tough expo run by the Tea Tree Gully Council will run next Tuesday as part of national Homeless Week and features 29 organisations offering everything from free beanies to low-cost food, resume-writing skills, school uniform support, a mobile laundry service and help with electricity bills. It’s all aimed at making life easier for those who need it event co-ordinator the city of Tea Tree Gully’s co-ordinator for community initiatives and partnerships Kelly Morris said. “We as a council partner with Pathway Community Center, which is just down the road in Modbury, and they hand out 2000 hampers of food every single fortnight,” she said. “Each family can only get one hamper per fortnight, so that’s 2000 families, and that has doubled in the past year or so. “So it’s a massive increase in people who are seeking food support, and you know that crunch is happening when people are seeking food.” South Australians are facing the pressure.
