Eight families could have their homes demolished after a local council determined they were illegally built and issued orders for them to be torn down.

The row of two-storey terraces were built on a narrow block that only had approval for commercial warehouse spaces.

Eden Park Property Ltd built the homes in south London after buying the block in 2018 but tenants now face the prospect of losing their homes following the council’s ruling.

Tenants living at the Kanli Mews block had been paying AUD $2000 a month in rent before being blindsided by Lewisham Council’s declaration the properties were below standard and needed to be demolished.

Magbule Selyahtinova, 50, has lived at one of the affected properties since 2021.

“I’m stressed because I have nowhere to go. We’re stuck in limbo. Where will we go,” she told the Daily Mail.

“We’re looking for a rental, but nobody will rent to us. That’s why we can’t move out.”

Mrs Selyahtinova said many residents had already left the block after news of the demolition order emerged.

Eden Park Property Ltd was issued an enforcement notice around the time Mrs Selyahtinova moved into the property. with the council requesting the homes be demolished or converted into storage spaces.

The developer appealed the demolition order in 2023 but an independent planner upheld the council’s decision last month.

The properties were described as providing a “poor standard of accommodation” and represented an “unacceptable form of development”.

The report also determined the development was “harmful to the character of the surrounding area” and were unsuitable for habitation.

The homes have since been placed on the market for sale.
