A Sydney rental offered to tenants for $400 a week is copping flack for its basic living conditions, with one person describing it as a “windowless dungeon”.
Photos of the studio show it has a kitchenette with a bunk bed above it, an ensuite and a table with two chairs.
While there are no visible windows on the wall, there is a skylight offering natural light.
People were quick to criticise it online after one person posted the photos to reddit with the caption, “live in a windowless dungeon for $400/week”.
The kitchenette includes a sink, shelving and a microwave. Picture: reddit.
One person pointed out that it was one of five studios, with the cheapest $400 per week and the priciest $420 per week – tenants who rented those that didn’t include fridges could have one put in for an additional $10 on top of the rent.
Many likened it to a prison, while others said a prison would “probably be better living conditions”.

“Would be good for someone leaving a long stint in gaol (sic) so they don’t get culture shock,” one person said.
“Even a prison cell has a window. And that’s free accommodation,” said another.
“I like the little table so the two cops can play cards while guarding the man in custody. This is a witness protection safe house right?,” one replied.
A desk and chairs are also included. Picture: reddit.
While many joked about the studio, others were concerned.
“Isn’t this illegal given a window needs to be openable to 10 per cent of the room for the room to be considered a bedroom?,” one said.
According the NSW Government website, rentals must meet seven minimum standards to make them liveable, which includes having “adequate natural or artificial lighting in each room” and “adequate ventilation”.
Others pointed out that historical photos of the property showed it used to be an old garage or workshop.
The property manager renting the studio was contacted for comment.
