A Perth grandmother who has spent decades caring for others is now facing the devastating loss of the family home she hoped would fund her retirement, after a hidden asbestos nightmare forced her into demolition. Mary Porritt, 76, a widowed pensioner from Hamersley, had planned to downsize in late 2025 and sell the home she had owned for more than 50 years. But instead of preparing for a new chapter, she has been plunged into months of stress, uncertainty and soaring costs after asbestos was discovered throughout the property. According to her family’s GoFundMe page, the trouble began in November 2025 when Ms Porritt arranged to install a new airconditioner before putting the house on the market.
