Olympic gold-medal swimmer Mack Horton and wife Ella have put their South Melbourne apartment on the market with $900,000-$990,000 price hopes.

Horton scored a first-place medal at the 2016 Olympics in the 400m freestyle event, becoming the first male swimmer from Victoria to do so.

At the 2020 Olympics, he received a bronze medal in the men’s 200m freestyle relay alongside teammates Zac Incerti, Flynn Southam and Elijah Winnington after he swam in the preliminary heats but not the actual final race.

Horton is also a four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and a World Championships gold medallist.

He announced his retirement from swimming in January 2024 but has remained active in the sport, serving as the Australian Swimmers Association’s president.

Jellis Craig Port Phillip director Warwick Gardiner, who has the listing alongside colleagues

Mack Burgoine and Ryan McKenzie, said the Hortons’ two-bedroom home had a New York loft-style feel.

Located inside a circa-1880s building, it features polished hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings and two terraces bordered by original parapets and draped in ivy.

The open-plan living and dining area includes a kitchen appointed with stone benchtops and stainless-steel appliances.

Mr Gardiner said the Hortons had converted a small third bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe for the main bedroom, providing plenty of storage space.

He added that the light-filled living area and the terraces were among the home’s highlights.

“It’s incredible to sit out there with a glass of wine and look out over Clarendon St and the city lights, it’s spectacular,” Mr Gardiner said.

“You have the borrowed greenery on the trees outside and the lovely Boston ivy growing around it, it adds to the privacy and the feeling of a hidden oasis”

Younger buyers and downsizers have been among the main buyers to inspect the abode, he added.

“We are finding that for young professionals, it’s an opportunity to get into the South Melbourne market,” Mr Gardiner said.

There’s two terraces to enjoy outdoor dining.

Downsizers are looking at the apartment as a Melbourne inner city “lock up and leave” base.

The apartment also offers a bathroom with an integrated laundry, video intercom entry, split-system heating and cooling, and internal and external stair access.

It’s close to public transport, the South Melbourne Market, Albert Park Lake and Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

The home at 192A Bank St will be auctioned at 12.30pm on December 6.
