The house at 25 St Clair Cres, Mt Waverley, sold at a weekend auction.

A family who dialled into an auction from their car snapped up a house in Melbourne’s southeast for $1.616m on Saturday.

Ray White’s Jacob Biviano said the parents had to pick up their children and were unable to stick around as 25 St Clair Crescent, Mt Waverley, went under the hammer.

However, this did not stop them from joining in the action as they and two other bidders competed to secure the home.

The husband put forward bids as his wife held the phone and their youngsters listened in, Mr Biviano said.

Bidding started at $1.4m and the house was placed on the market at the $1.58m mark, after being listed with a $1.5m-$1.6m range.

Mr Biviano said the family were “very, very happy” to buy the four-bedroom abode, which is set on a 725sq m block in the Mount Waverley Secondary College zone.

“The family are looking to build a new home on the site,” he said.

Mr Biviano said that properties zoned for Mount Waverley Secondary College were very attractive to buyers.

The block measures 725sq m, while the house is zoned for the Mount Waverley Secondary College and is close to Syndal South Primary School.

“Older houses that are suitable for knockdown and rebuilds into family homes are selling well in the school zone,” he said.

Mr Biviano said it was not just local families, but those living in suburbs further away who were seeking to buy in the area.

In the past two months, his agency has seen an 85 to 90 per cent clearance rate for Mount Waverley auctions.

“I would say from our perspective, those rates are very strong,” Mr Biviano added.

Ray White’s Courtney Matthews conducted the auction.
